I recently completed a #RLVRefresh of my master bedroom corner!
Check out the clutter fest it was before. 😂
This was ‘cleaned up’ believe it or not! This corner used to be home to an old faux leather chair that was peeling, its ottoman companion and a whole bunch of clothes/toys/books. I got rid of the chair when J was out of town (he liked that thing – who knew why!?) and it has been empty for 5 months.
Well, not completely empty as you can see.
This corner of our master was a drop-off zone for us (me). I had baskets with no purpose, work files strewn about, broken decor, piles of receipts buried in one of the baskets, too many pillows hiding behind the mirror.
It was a mess and it was giving me stress! Something had to be done because this just wasn’t working.
I know I didn’t want more furniture here – I wanted to keep it ‘light’, simple and most importantly, functional.
It was driving me nuts trying to keep it orderly…until now.
Here’s how I refreshed this space in less than 30 minutes:
1: Remove everything and start with a clean palate
The reason why it didn’t function well the first time? I neglected the first step. I didn’t empty it completely before refreshing it. 🤦🏻♀️ Emptying it first allowed me to see the space and only put back what was absolutely necessary. I gave those baskets purpose and I removed things they didn’t need to be there.
2. Decide what you want to use the space for and plan for that.
What I didn’t want:
- work files and items visible
- things on the floor
- overflowing baskets
What I wanted for this space:
- clean and tidy
- minimalist
- pretty
- a place for my everyday bags, wallet
- a small drop off zone for things that need my attention
- an easy way to put my work files away
- decrease the tendency to leave things on the floor
3. Move things around until it feels right. Don’t be afraid to move things a hundred times over.
If it doesn’t work at first, keep trying! Sometimes what looks good in my head might not necessarily translate into real life. As you can see in my Stories, I adjusted the mirror and moved the baskets around many times.
4. Bring in things from other areas of your home.
You don’t need to spend a ton of money to freshen your space. Shop your home! Find things that might not be needed elsewhere and bring those in! It’s amazing what I discover in my house without spending a dime! I brought in that stool that was in the office. It wasn’t being used regularly so I decided to try it here.
5. Create different heights.
That stool from the office helped create visual interest by elevating one basket. It looked so much better than having both baskets and the plant on the floor at the same heights.
6. Adjust and re-access.
If you feel it doesn’t work after a day or two, try again! Sometimes what looks good might not be functional in real life. I lived with this space for about a week before sharing because I wanted to see how it panned out.
And voila! It FEELS fresh, clean, organized and the best part: I didn’t spend any money! 👏🏼☺️
